At least 20 die when tsunami hits beaches around Sunda Strait in Indonesia

JAKARTA (REUTERS) – At least 20 people died when a tsunami hit beaches around Sunda Strait in Indonesia on Saturday night (Dec 22), the government’s Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a statement on Sunday.

It said 165 other people had been injured.

“20 people died, 165 people were injured and two people are missing in three regions,” national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.

“There is a possibility the tsunami occurred due to an underwater landslide caused by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. At the same time there is a tidal wave due to the full moon. So there is a combination of natural phenomena, tsunami and tidal waves,” he added.

The volcano erupted at around 10.30pm on Saturday.

This story is developing.
