The following report compiles all significant security incidents confirmed by New York Times reporters throughout Afghanistan from the past seven days. It is necessarily incomplete as many local officials refuse to confirm casualty information. The report includes government claims of insurgent casualty figures, but in most cases these cannot be independently verified by The Times. Similarly, the reports do not include Taliban claims for their attacks on the government unless they can be verified. Both sides routinely inflate casualty totals for their opponents.

At least 64 pro-government forces and 26 civilians were killed in Afghanistan the past week. The deadliest attack took place in Nangarhar Province, where a Humvee laden with explosives targeted an Afghan National Civil Order Force military base in the Gandumak area of Shirzad District. At least 14 soldiers were killed and four others were wounded in the attack. A fight erupted and 10 people were killed after a protest turned violent in Hesa-e-Awal Behsud District. Afghan special forces had been sent to two districts — Hesa-e-Awal Behsud and Hesa-e-Dowam Behsud — to introduce new police commanders, though local residents were opposed to their arrival. A protest broke out in response to the special forces’ presence. According to local accounts, security forces opened fire on civilians. According to security forces, one of the protesters grabbed a soldier’s firearm and opened fire on the protesters. The government has called for an investigation of what happened.

Feb. 4 Faryab Province: three soldiers killed

The Taliban attacked security forces in Juma Bazaar area, the center of Khwaja Sabz Posh District, killing three soldiers, including a battalion commander, and taking 11 others prisoner.

Feb. 4 Herat Province: one security force killed

One member of the National Directorate of Security was killed and two others were wounded in a Taliban ambush in the village of Posta-e-Bairaq in Ghoryan District.

Feb. 4 Nangarhar Province: one civilian killed

A mortar fired by the Taliban hit a house in Garkhel area of Shirzad District, killing one woman and wounding six people, including four children.

Feb. 3 Takhar Province: two security forces killed

The Taliban attacked a house of a pro-government militia commander in the Qara Parchaw area of Taloqan, the provincial capital, killing the commander and his son, also a militia member.

Feb. 3 Nangarhar Province: five security forces killed

The Taliban attacked a security outpost in the Momand Tangi area of Spin Ghar District, killing five pro-government militia members. Local authorities claimed 11 Taliban members were killed in the attack.

Feb. 3 Badghis Province: six police officers killed

Six police officers were killed and another was wounded when the Taliban attacked Afghan forces in the village of Sanjidak of Moqor District.

Feb. 3 Helmand Province: one commando killed

The Taliban targeted a Humvee with a rocket in the Aab Bazak area of Girishk District, killing one commando and wounding four others.

Feb. 3 Sar-i-Pul Province: six security forces killed

The Taliban attacked security outposts in the Aaq Gonbad village of Gosfandi District, killing six members of the territorial army and wounding eight others after capturing the outpost and seizing weapons and equipment.

Feb. 3 Uruzgan Province: four security forces killed

A military base in the Chinarak area of Tarin Kot, the provincial capital, was targeted by a car bomb, killing two soldiers and two police officers. An additional three security forces were also wounded.

Feb. 3 Nangarhar Province: one civilian killed

A provincial court judge was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in Jalalabad, the provincial capital. The attackers managed to escape from the area.

Feb. 3 Kabul Province: one police officer killed

A roadside bomb hit a police vehicle in the 15th Police District in Kabul city, the capital, killing one police officer and wounding three others.

Feb. 2 Baghlan Province: one police officer killed

The provincial council guard was shot and killed in the Second Police District of Pul-i-Khumri City, the provincial capital.

Feb. 2 Kunduz Province: four police officers killed

The Taliban attacked a security outpost in the First Police District of Kunduz city, the provincial capital, killing four police officers and wounding three others in three hours of fighting.

Feb. 2 Badghis Province: one security force killed

One member of the National Directorate of Security, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency, was killed and four others were wounded in clashes with the Taliban in Qadis District. Local authorities claimed that eight members of the Taliban fighters were killed and four others were wounded.

Feb. 2 Nangarhar Province: one soldier killed

A roadside bomb hit a military vehicle in the Fifth Police District of Jalalabad, the provincial capital, killing one soldier and wounding two others.

Feb. 2 Kabul Province: two civilians killed

Two civilians were killed in a magnetic bomb explosion in the Fourth Police District in Kabul city, the capital.

Feb. 1 Balkh Province: two civilians killed

An explosive device made by a Taliban bombmaker in Sholgara District was left in a field, to be later planted on a road. The bombmaker’s nieces thought it was a piece of metal, so they took it to sell. While transferring the bomb, it exploded, killing two civilians.

Feb. 1 Kabul Province: one soldier and one civilian killed

An army truck was hit by a magnetic bomb in the Seventh Police District of Kabul City, the capital, killing one soldier and one civilian. Another civilian was wounded in the explosion.

Feb. 1 Kabul Province: one security force killed

One member of the National Directorate of Security, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in the Fifth Police District of Kabul city, the capital.

Jan. 31 Takhar Province: two civilians killed

Two civilians were killed and another was wounded by Taliban fighters in the Akbar Bai area of Taloqan, the provincial capital, after they failed to stop at a checkpoint.

Jan. 31 Kabul Province: one security force and one civilian killed

Two people were assassinated in the 12th Police District of Kabul city, the capital. One of those killed was a member of the National Directorate of Security and the other was a civilian.

Jan. 31 Kandahar Province: one civilian killed

The imam of a mosque was killed in his home by unknown gunmen in the Ninth Police District of Kandahar city, the provincial capital.

Jan. 31 Faryab Province: two civilians killed

The Taliban attacked the center of Almar District, killing two civilians and wounding 14 others.

Jan. 31 Herat Province: three security forces killed

The Taliban attacked the village of Miyan-Dujouee in Pashto Zarghoon District, killing three pro-government militia members. Local authorities claimed that two members of the Taliban fighters were also killed during the clash.

Jan. 30 Balkh Province: one security force killed

A bomb attached to the motorcycle of a member of the National Directorate of Security, exploded in the center of Kaldar District, killing the N.D.S. member and wounding three civilians and another member of security forces.

Jan. 30 Kandahar Province: three civilians killed

A motorcycle was blown up by a roadside bomb in Salihan area of Panjwai District, killing three civilians. A child was also among those killed.

Jan. 30 Nangarhar Province: 14 soldiers killed

Two groups of gunmen engaged in a firefight in the Abganda village of Shahr-e-Bozorg District. Six people across both sides were killed, and five others were wounded.
