Re “New Twist on Bad Female Bosses” (Arts & Leisure, June 16):
Women are understandably ambivalent about embracing power, partly because they see pop culture images that exaggerate but also reflect reality. But you can’t be an effective leader without using your power. And you can’t become a leader without intending to lead.Further, workplace culture won’t change until enough women stay in the game to the top so they can change it.
That’s why I teach women how to deconstruct the power narrative we’ve been taught and reconstruct it in healthy ways as the limitless power to do worthwhile things, innovate and make life better. This shift enables women to elevate their intentions with confidence, so there’s no motivation to be a bad boss.
It’s time for a new power paradigm. Women can lead the way. But first we must be aware of the negative cultural narrative we have been socialized to believe. We have to liberate ourselves and join hands with our sisters of all generations — and men who are of the same mind — to lead the change.
