Opinion | Should Mike Bloomberg Enter the Democratic Race?

To the Editor:

Re “Bloomberg Bid for Presidency Starts to Rustle” (front page, Nov. 8):

Michael Bloomberg may be the Democrats’ best and only chance to capture the White House in 2020, and I’m super-psyched that the former three-term mayor of New York City appears to be throwing his hat into the ring!

In this writer’s opinion there is no candidate on the Democratic side who can beat Donald Trump, if he survives impeachment. Joe Biden is too old, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are too far to the left and too angry, and Mayor Pete is just too young and inexperienced.

Michael Bloomberg was the best mayor that New York ever had. He would finance most of his own campaign and not be beholden to any individual or corporate entities. He stands among the strongest proponents of gun control laws and is a huge supporter of the environment and a woman’s right to choose.

These are the very qualities America needs after almost three years of Donald Trump in the Oval Office. Mr. Bloomberg’s candidacy would energize the Democratic base and attract huge numbers of independent voters. I like Mike!

To the Editor:

I admire Michael Bloomberg’s work to strengthen gun control. However, to be successful in the presidential election, a candidate will have to excite young people, women and minorities. Mr. Bloomberg will not be able to do that.

To the Editor:

The commentary on Michael Bloomberg’s potential run for the presidency has been all about the politics: Can he win the nomination? Whose candidacies will he hurt? Is he too old? Is it too late? Can he beat Donald Trump?

Instead of focusing on the horse race, I think it would be instructive to consider what a Bloomberg presidency might look like — sound management practices, evidence-driven policies, middle-of-the-road politics, fiscal responsibility. For a change, let’s talk about who would be the best president, not the ebb and flow of the race.
