Opinion | Restrict School Lunches for Those Who Can’t Pay?

To the Editor:

Re “For Students Who Owe on School Lunch Bills, Menu Is Much Smaller” (news article, May 9):

For a school district to deprive schoolchildren of a proper nutritious lunch in the richest country in the world is a policy that is infuriating and hard to contemplate. Children should not be denied food or “shamed” as penalty for financial accountability of their parents or guardians. For many poor children lunch is the only decent meal of the day.

It should be obvious to educators that hunger slows growth and learning. The federal government should mandate a free lunch for all children in public schools.
