Re “To Message of Racial Division and Fear, Crowd Responds With Cheers” (Political Memo, Sept. 11):

Ever-faithful Trump supporters may represent a minority (hovering around 40 percent approval), but that still works out to tens of millions of American voters passionately embracing the daily revelations of President Trump’s corruption, incompetence, racism and indecency.

How is it possible that Mr. Trump, once accurately described by his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, as a “horrible human being,” could be anyone’s idea of a good choice for president? A deeper look at Trump voters and their contribution to a Trumpist America is long overdue.

They are making America anything but “great.” It is blazingly clear that Mr. Trump and members of his administration are a cesspool of corruption, scandal, self-dealing and reckless idiocy. Why would there be 40 percent approval for that? Or 30 percent? Or 10 percent? Or even 1 percent?

Racist yearning for white supremacy appears to be one strong reason that Mr. Trump has more than 80 percent approval among registered Republicans.

A gigantically unfit Donald Trump should be removed from office immediately, but a sizable minority of American voters will likely keep on supporting an America of Trumpist values. That is a disgrace. How can we grow out of that?

Re “The Mayor Who Banned Pesticides and Became a Hero” (news article, Sept. 19):

The decision by the mayor of a small French village in Brittany to ban pesticides, which the French state claims he has no right to do, looks similar to California’s fight with the Trump administration in pushing for higher emission standards.

We are finally standing up to the fact that corporations are able to use national legislation to further and protect their goals at the expense of the populace. The example of the small French village shows us that we can change this if enough people make political noise.
