Re “Segregationists in Biden’s Past Set Off a Clash” (front page, June 20):
The comment made by Joe Biden in which he referred to his collegiality with Senate colleagues early in his career could well have been made without specifically naming the egregiously segregationist Senators James O. Eastland and Herman E. Talmadge.
Commendably, the former vice president, who is usually well meaning but often short on tact, has been stressing the need for a return of what has been a long absent civility in the legislative process.
In this environment, where words and sensitivity matter, he should be more discreet.
