Opinion | Don’t Boycott Georgia

To the Editor:

Re “How to Help Protect Abortion Rights” (editorial, May 16):

As a filmmaker who shot in Georgia for much of 2018, I am dismayed by the new laws in this state that limit a woman’s right to choose. However, I am further dismayed at the shortsightedness exhibited by some in the Hollywood community who wish to teach Georgia a lesson by hurting its vibrant filmmaking economy through a boycott.

Georgia’s filmmaking industry is young, buoyed by generous tax credits and incentives, and many of its participants are staunch supporters of a woman’s right to choose. During the past year, I worked with talented young actors and crew, many of whom are African-American, and many of whom are women. By boycotting Georgia, Hollywood would inadvertently also be boycotting the very diversity in the film business that it has gone to great lengths in recent years to support.

There are many ways to combat a bad law, like donating filmmaking profits to the American Civil Liberties Union and Fair Fight Action, as Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams said they will now do. Boycotting hard-working, diverse people who are the future of the film industry is not one of them.
