Opinion | Curbing Presidential Power, After Trump

To the Editor:

It’s possible that something good could emerge as a result of the Trump presidency — the curtailing of presidential power.

Future congressional leaders, with the assistance of a like-minded administration, could address the many ways that an unlawful or unprincipled president such as the one currently in office can abuse his power.

Although they built in safeguards, surely the framers of the Constitution could not have imagined a president such as Donald Trump. And if they could imagine it, they surely would have placed a limit on the president’s pardon power, his ability to claim executive privilege, his immunity from criminal prosecution, his ability to declare war, and his ability to defy and thwart the checks and balances that they were so careful to establish.

Mr. Trump has blatantly exceeded the powers of his office, and it seems no one is willing or able to hold him to account. This threat to democracy was surely never anticipated and should never be allowed to occur again.
