To the Editor:
Re “Conservatives Against Trump,” by George T. Conway III, Steve Schmidt, John Weaver and Rick Wilson (Op-Ed, Dec. 19), announcing their Lincoln Project, an effort to preserve American values and defeat the president:
I used to be a conservative and a Republican. Now I’m neither. However, the eloquent statement by four highly respected Republicans makes me look back at my past with less embarrassment.
The Party of Lincoln is no more. Craven Trumpistas, in and out of government, have made it a cult of personality. The president makes me squirm every time he goes abroad, and his party members fear to call him out lest they be primaried.
May the Lincoln Project stiffen the spines of real Republicans — those who realize the only way to save the Grand Old Party, and our country, is to work for its defeat next year.

To the Editor:
I am one of those many who sadly suffer from what Michelle Goldberg recently described as “democracy grief.” This Op-Ed article has lifted my spirits enough to be once again galvanized for hope and action. The authors’ eloquent words are inspiring and appreciated in a time of terribly dangerous darkness for our country.
I am a Democrat, by the way, and deeply hope that I would place patriotism over party, as they have, were these horrors being visited upon us by a Democratic president. I thank them for their noble and important work promised over the next 11 months. I would like to learn about any ways in which ordinary people like me can be involved.

To the Editor:
Finally, real conservatives are emerging to assume their very important role in the American democratic republic! I am a staunchly independent voter and have been searching for true conservatives to balance the far-left trend in the Democratic Party. The Lincoln Project founders and members are fine examples of true patriotism; they are putting country above party and deferring a short-term power play for long-term conservative principles.
Just as our Constitution established a balance of power, I believe that each party provides a necessary balance to each other. The absence of true conservatives in our political discourse has had terrible consequences.
Welcome back!

To the Editor:
What a wonderful, thoughtful, well-written Op-Ed. I am a Democrat, but I would consider supporting Republicans of principle who are not afraid to let go of President Trump’s coattails and gigantic tie and stand up for what they believe in.

To the Editor:
Thank you to the founders of the Lincoln Project. Today I am feeling hope for the first time in a long time. As a former Republican, I am proud to observe the old spirit of the party emerge to save our nation from foreign and domestic tyranny. I feel the spirit of America rising deep within me once again. National pride has always been at the forefront of our ability to defeat our adversaries.
Common sense and decency must prevail in this fight, the most serious and crucial of our country. Without it, I fear we are destined to lose what we have enjoyed and fought for over 200 years. In my 81 years on this planet, I have lived through many wars. This is a war that has to be won.
