I must commend the Irish Independent for refusing to work with An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, in his attempt to “find the leak” which, he claims, will allow him to explain how “damaging” information about Maria Bailey’s compensation claim made its way into the public domain – especially her quite impressive 10km running time post-swing fall.
If Ms Bailey’s story sprang a leak, in my opinion, it was because it was already full of holes.

A rake’s progress – all the way to Downing Street
Now that we know – well, almost – that Boris the Buffoon will be the next British prime minister, is it not time to look at how a man of so little character, probity and shamelessness can reach such heights?
This is a person who has been sacked for lying (by ‘The Times’), manipulates the truth to suit his own agendas, been totally incompetent as foreign secretary and has always maintained a rather relaxed relationship with the truth.
How can anybody with such credentials get so far in public life? To paraphrase: is it because “badness” succeeds when “decency” stands aside?

Gender-neutral uniform can cause identity confusion
Your reporter Callum Lavery’s account of reaction to a Co Wicklow school’s new uniform policy is enlightening.
One of my concerns is that the school may have simply informed parents rather than consulted with them before making a final decision.
As a former school principal, I can see the new policy encouraging gender identity confusion. To my mind, true “gender neutrality” is where there is a common uniform for all students.

Church has gone from being critic to leader of silly ideas
I was always taught that Catholicism was a leaven against silly or extreme ideas.
From the more extreme ideologies of the mid-20th century – extreme state power of the Marxist or Nazi persuasions – to the excesses of the sexual revolution of the 1960s, Catholicism could be relied upon to provide a critical analysis of the harmful effects of these ideologies.
Fast-forward to 21st-century Ireland, where dubious gender ideology seems to be taking root. Only now, elements within Catholicism seem to be leading the irrational charge.
I had to check it wasn’t April 1 when hearing a “Catholic” school in Co Wicklow was actually to the fore in pushing this particular dubious agenda.
Please tell me it’s a bad dream.

The world has still not learned its lesson from wars
The cruel irony is that we have not learned the lessons of war – the world has never changed since the dreadful conflicts of World War I
and II.
The barbarity continues today in Sudan, the Congo, eastern Ukraine, Syria, Yemen and Palestine.
Climate change, global warming, domestic violence, child sex abuse, human trafficking, the refugee crisis, antimicrobial resistance, overpopulation and the splintering of terrorist organisations are global hazards that are all bound to make our collective security a redundant one.
Time for collective co-ordination. As Elie Wiesel eloquently put it: “Every war is absurd and meaningless – where people will stop hating one another; where people will hate the otherness of the Other rather than respect it.”

Limit Dublin squad to 25 and let the rest play elsewhere
There is talk of splitting Dublin in two. How would the other counties like it if they were split in two? They should limit Dublin’s team to, say, 25 players every year. Those not picked should be free to play elsewhere.
Once you play for another county, you can’t retry for your native county. The GAA is an amateur organisation. It should have enough leeway to allow players trial for other counties. The GAA is only a fraction of what it could be.
