Leslie Ann Horgan: 'I'm delighted to present the only end-of-year awards that matter – the 2018 Poppies'

The remains of the turkey’s been curried, the straggler gifts have been given and on Monday we’ll see out the old year, and with it the last of the festive sparkle. Even if you’re the type to leave the tree up until Nollaig na mBan, the Christmas magic ends when you’re trudging home in high heels and a deluge in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Thankfully, we don’t have too long to wait before there’s a hint of glitter on the horizon – January 6 is also the date for the Golden Globe Awards.

Before we move on to the 2019 accolades, however, there are some very important 2018 gongs still to be presented. Yes, today’s the day that you’ve been waiting all year for – the announcement of the first ever Pop Life Awards. Voted for by an expert jury of one, the Poppies (Lifies? Plifies?) are prestigious awards given only to those deserving few who have had a real and lasting effect on Celebland this year.

Promotion of the Year

Meghan Markle

Stepping up from commoner to princess, C-lister to A-lister and well-turned-out actor to global style icon in one fell swoop, the new Duchess of Sussex was basically the winner of 2018. After Markle-mania reached fever pitch in May, there has been a slight cooling of public affections of late, but you can expect the California girl to alight back on her pedestal once the royal baby arrives in spring. Meghan was also runner-up in the Royal Wedding of the Year category, which was won by Princess Eugenie.

Ridiculous Name of the Year

Stormi Webster

After flying in the face of the family business and keeping her pregnancy secret, Kylie Jenner gave birth to her first child on February 1. Fending off competition from Miranda Kerr’s son Hart and half-sister Khloe Kardashian’s daughter True, little Stormi takes the award for the irritatingly quirky spelling of her already quirky name. Stormi was also runner-up in the Climatic Name of the Year, won by Stormy Daniels for living up to her moniker after Aer Lingus lost her bags last month.

Falling-out of the Year

Kim Cattrall

It was a statement so dramatic that it would even make Samantha Jones blush. Following the tragic death of her brother in February, Kim Cattrall wrote a scathing Instagram post telling Sarah Jessica Parker that her condolences were not welcomed and that the “hypocrite” should leave her alone. Since then, any illusions of friendship between the cast and hope of a Sex And The City 3 movie have been well and truly washed away by a flood of reports of alleged bullying and bitchiness. Kim was also runner-up for Outburst of the Year, which went to Shane Lynch for his Late Late Show rant.

Comeback of the Year

The Spice Girls

With a plethora of ‘heritage acts’ taking to the road again, not to mention Love Island’s resurgence as TV’s most talked-about programme, this was a hard fought race. Ultimately, the reduced-in-number Spice Girls clinched it when they added Croke Park to their tour schedule. The girl band were also runners-up in the Good Decision of the Year category, which was won by Victoria Beckham for choosing not to rejoin them.

Nosedive of the Year

Ant McPartlin

What a turbulent year telly’s favourite cheeky chappie has had. First came a drink driving offence and driving ban in March, followed by his checking into rehab for addition to prescription medication in April. Then, in November, his divorce was granted after a bitter split with Lisa Armstrong following an admission of adultery on his part. He is said to have made the admission so as to speed up the divorce process. With his hit TV show Saturday Night Take Away on hiatus, he was replaced in the I’m A Celeb jungle by Holly Willoughby. Ant and former partner in crime Declan Donnelly were also nominated for the Split of the Year award, but were pipped to the post by joint-winners Jennifer Aniston/Justin Theroux and Martin O’Neill & Roy Keane/Ireland.

Congratulations to all of the very deserving winners. We can’t wait to see what you have in store for 2019.
