Words of Gratitude From Florida
The New York Times asked poets laureate from across the country what the people in their states had to be thankful for in this difficult year.
Florida’s too flat and too hot; it voted for Trump and would again if given a chance. It ranks at the bottom in teacher’s pay. We live in St. Petersburg, the lightning capital of the world. We have a royal palm tree growing right next to our house, probably deposited there by one of the exotic birds, an ibis or great white egret, strutting around here. Writers and artists flock to Florida with the other immigrants, giving us good conversations and plenty of unknown cheap restaurants from distant countries. When we plant something it starts growing immediately. Maybe we love it because it’s not boring, or just boring enough.
— Peter Meinke, poet laureate of Florida
