Woman wins $2million lottery after buying ticket for wrong drawing

A woman who unknowingly missed the cutoff to buy a lottery ticket by one minute ended up winning $2million in another drawing. Elizabeth Johnson of Lucama, North Carolina, rushed to buy a Powerball ticket at the end of her busy day on Wednesday for that night’s drawing.

Johnson thought she bought her ticket on time using Online Play but had actually just missed the 9.57pm cutoff. However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Her Quick Pick ticket was good for Saturday’s drawing. Her $3 Power Play ticket matched all five white ball numbers to win $1million but it doubled to $2million thanks to the 2X multiplier, according to a statement by the North Carolina Education Lottery.

The odds of matching all five white balls are 1 in a whopping 11.6million.

‘It was definitely a shock!’ said Johnson. ‘When I got the message saying that I had won I thought, “Well, I didn’t even play tonight.”’

Johnson, an interpreter, claimed the prize on Thursday at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh and chose to take about $1.4million home right away, minus federal and state tax withholdings. She plans to buy a home as well as go on vacation with her lucky winning.

‘The kids want to go to Disneyland,’ Johnson said. ‘We’ve never been and now we’ll get to.’

Meanwhile, the Saturday Powerball jackpot has reached $253million as an annuity or $172.7million.
