A North Carolina woman’s wedgie from a tight pair of denim shorts she wore on a date left her with life-threatening sepsis and a week-long ICU visit.

The woman, a 25-year-old named Sam, recounted her unusual medical emergency in which she ‘could’ve easily died’ in a viral TikTok that has garnered more than 8million views.

On a day-long date three years ago with her now-boyfriend, Sam wore cutoff shorts that gave her a serious wedgie.

She didn’t think much of it until she discovered a bump on her backside later that night where the fabric had been chafing her skin.

‘The next day, I felt very sore and then started feeling ill – just not 100%,’ Sam told BuzzFeed.

As time went on, it became worse, Sam said, describing it as ‘throbbing, stabbing pain’.

After going to the doctor the next day to get treated with antibiotics for a possible skin infection, Sam discovered it was too late.

The next morning, she was in septic shock and had to be rushed to the emergency room by her mother.

‘I was shivering, very breathless, could not walk and had extreme body aches,’ she said. ‘They admitted me to the ICU and that’s when I realized this was a bit more serious than I had anticipated.’

Sam ended up in the ICU with cellulitis, a painful skin infection, and sepsis, the life-threatening response the body has to an infection.

Doctors even contemplated debridement surgery, which would cut off the infected part of her butt, Sam said.

After recovering in the ICU without surgery, and then spending three days in the ER, Sam was able to go home, where she was told to rest for a month.

While she thought her experience would be funny to share with her TikTok followers, she told BuzzFeed she never expected receiving the attention its garnered.

‘Most people were shocked that this could happen, BUT I was extremely surprised at the amount of people saying the same thing happened to them too!’ she said.

‘I’m happy I made the TikTok, and although it’s extremely scary to have one of the most embarrassing things that has ever happened to me on the internet, it reminds people that we’re all human and experience weird stuff, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.’

While recovering in the hospital, she got a visit by her date, who then met her entire family and spent the night taking care of her.

Three years later, they are still together.
