Woman, 2 children taken to hospital after house fire in Markham

Three people have been taken to hospital, including two children, after a house fire in Markham on Sunday, officials say.

York Regional Police said emergency crews were called to a home on Bur Oak Avenue shortly after 10 a.m.

A police spokesperson said there were reports of a “large bang … consistent with something like an explosion.”

A 14-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl were among those injured and were transported to Sick Kids hospital, police said.

A woman was brought to Sunnybrook hospital. Her relation to the children is unclear.

The extent of injuries is unknown, but police previously said the three victims suffered burns.

Officers said they are investigating if there were other people inside the home at the time of the blaze and said the whereabouts of some other residents is unknown.

Investigators said they had not yet gone into the home as of early Sunday afternoon amid concerns around structural damage.
