Woman, 103, vows to 'go wild' now she's had her Covid vaccine
A 103 year-old woman has declared that she plans to ‘go wild’ now she has received her coronavirus vaccine. Mona Jeanne received the injection last week – just in time to celebrate her 104th birthday on February 15.
Asked by a journalist how she planned to celebrate her big day, Mona says she will ‘go wild’ having vaccinated, and is particularly excited to see her family and 27 grandchildren again.
Mona, from Wilmington in Massachusetts told CBS Boston that she felt ‘just the same, not a bit different,’ after receiving her vaccine. And she said she is well-used to receiving injections, having lived so long.
She survived the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, the Great Depression and two World Wars. The United States has now administered Covid vaccines to around 12.8% of its population. Infections, deaths and hospitalizations at their lowest in months, sparking hopes that the pandemic may finally be drawing to a close.
At the minute, only the elderly, medically vulnerable and frontline workers are eligible for the vaccines, but officials hope to dramatically boost availability by spring.
Scientists say being vaccinated offers up to 95% protection from a serious Covid infection. There is also growing evidence that at least one vaccine – the AstraZeneca shot – can stop Covid from being transmitted altogether.
The United States has now recorded more than 27million Covid infections, and more than 463,000 deaths.
