Widow reveals her love of working at McDonald's as she turns 100

A widow has told of her love for her job at a McDonald’s restaurant and says she won’t give it up as she prepares to turn 100. Ruth Shuster celebrates the big birthday on March 3 – and will spend part of the celebrations at the restaurant where she works as a greeter and table wiper.

Ruth, from Irwin in Pennsylvania began working in 1971, after she was widowed. She has grafted ever since – and says she wouldn’t have things any other way. Ruth, who joined McDonald’s in 2015, said: ‘I became a widow when I was 50 and I’ve been working ever, ever, ever since and I like working.’

Ruth works three days a week and used to sing to customers on Friday, before Covid forced her restaurant to adopt new safety policies. She also misses the old social life she used to enjoy, telling WTAE: ‘I’d go dancing four days a week. you can’t go dancing nowhere. There’s no dances around.’

McDonald’s has given Ruth a special mailbox in the parking lot so well-wishers can leave her birthday cars – a gesture that left her visibily touched. They have also erected a special sign outside to alert visitors to the special day, and called their veteran worker ‘100% wonderful.’

Sharing her thoughts on her birthday, Ruth said: ‘To me it’s just a number.’ And explaining why she continues to work, the greeter added: ‘I get pay day. I get paid, I pay my bills, and that’s good. I never had a lot of money, but I always have enough.’
