A comic book featuring Jesus as a superhero’s bumbling sidekick was shelved after it sparked an unholy row.

Publisher DC Comics – home of icons like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman – was hit by protests over Second Coming.

It tells the story of God sending Jesus, who he thinks is a disappointment, back to learn how to be a proper messiah from 21st century superhero Sun Man – “the son God wished he had”.

The cover shows muscular Sun Man beating up one gangster while meek Jesus forces a loaf of bread into the mouth of another.

Outraged Christians branded the work blasphemous and a petition to halt its publication, launched by lobby group CitizenGo, was signed by 233,000.

A post on the site after DC’s U-turn said: “Can you imagine the media and political uproar if DC was altering and poking fun at Muhammad or Buddha?”

Writer Mark Russell and artist Richard Pace plan to publish elsewhere.

Mr Pace said: “We’re looking forward to announcing the new home for Sun Man, Jesus and their family soon.”

But Gregory Mertz of CitizenGo vowed further action.

He added: “This was the right move by DC. Jesus is much more than a superhero.”

DC Comics declined to comment.
