West Point crash: ‘At least one dead’ in US Military Academy accident

At least one Army recruit has reportedly died after an armoured personnel vehicle carrying cadets overturned in the US.

A major emergency response is under way after the crash at West Point, New York, happened around 7.30am local time near the United States Military Academy.

One cadet was unresponsive when they were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, it was reported.

A cadet lost their life after the five tonne truck rolled over, according to ABCNewsRadio reporter Aaron Katersky.

Up to five others were taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance following the incident near the Camp Natural Bridge summer training site for cadets.

The US Military Academy tweeted: "There has been an accident in the vicinity of the Camp Natural Bridge training site.

"Emergency vehicles are responding. Please avoid Route 293. More information will follow."

The armoured vehicle was carrying about 20 cadets, NBC New York reported.

The report said one cadet was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries and was described as non-responsive.

Four or five others were taken to a hospital with back pain but were expected to be OK, military police added.

The US Military Academy, also known as West Point, was founded in 1802 and is about 50 miles north of New York City.

Originally established a fort overlooking the Hudson River, it is one of five US service academies.
