Monday’s windstorm kept provincial police very busy as officers responded to 50 crashes over a 24-period in Wellington County.

Police said almost all of the collisions involved the driver ending up with their vehicle in the ditch.

“They were unable to see where they were going or they drove into snowdrifts on the road,” OPP said in a news release on Wednesday.

Seven of the collisions resulted in major damage to the vehicles involved and two vehicles needed to be pulled out of snow drifts.

Drivers were encouraged to avoid unnecessary trips and several roads throughout the county were closed due to whiteout conditions.

OPP in both Wellington and Grey counties issued 15 tickets for driving on a closed road during the windstorm.

The total fine is $110 and three demerit points.

“If you come across a road-closed sign, please do not ignore it — the dangers to you may not be evident until it is too late,” said Acting Staff Sgt. Calum Rankin with the West Region OPP.

With another 10 centimetres of snow in the forecast on Wednesday, drivers are being asked once again to avoid any unnecessary travel.
