US representatives plan to impeach Donald Trump for inciting Capitol riots
US representatives are drawing up plans to impeach Donald Trump in an attempt to get rid of him after he incited a riot at the US Capitol building. Ihlan Omar, a US Representative for Minnesota, said she is beginning the process – which could see Trump removed from office – after Wednesday evening’s riots.
She tweeted: ‘I am drawing up Articles of Impeachment. Donald J. Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate. We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath.’
Omar’s efforts were supported by her fellow Democrat Representative Rashida Tlaib, of Michigan.
If the House of Representatives – which has a Democrat majority – voted to impeach Trump, he would then be tried before the US Senate. That could subsequently see senators vote to ‘convict’ Trump of the articles he faces, and remove him from office.
Joe Biden is due to be inaugurated on January 20, and it is unclear if representatives would be able to organize an impeachment hearing in the time he has remaining. If they were able to do so, Vice President Mike Pence would serve as president until Biden’s inauguration.
