US Offers $10million reward for information on Isis-K leader after probe

The US on Monday offered a reward of up to $10million for information that would lead to the capture of Isis-K leader Sanullah Ghafari – or for helping to find those responsible for the August 2021 attack at the Kabul airport that killed 13 Americans.

The Islamic State-Khorasan Province, or Isis-K is the regional Islamic State affiliate, previously fought both the Western-backed government that fell in August and the Taliban. Ghafari was appointed to lead the group in June 2020, and is responsible for approving all Isis-K operations throughout Afghanistan, including approving of funding to conduct operations, the US State Department said.

In November, the State Department classified Ghafari as a ‘Specially Designated Global Terrorist.’

The massive potential reward comes after the US military said on Friday that a single Islamic State bomber was behind the attack that killed 13 US droops and at least 170 Afghans at Kabul airport last August. The August 26 bombing occurred as US troops were trying to get both Americans and Afghans out of the area following Taliban’s takeover.

On Friday, General Frank McKenzie, the head of US Central Command, shared that the investigation into the attack found it was not as ‘complex’ of an operation as officials initially thought.

‘The investigation found that a single, explosive device killed at least 170 Afghan civilians and 13 US servicemembers by explosively directing ball bearings through a packed crowd and into our men and women at Abbey gate,’ McKenzie said.
The months-long investigation into the Isis-K terror attack in Kabul concluded that the mission was conducted by a single suicide bomber whose explosive vest was packed with ball bearings, which caused wounds that looked similar to gunshots.

In November, US officials said they believed Isis-K could develop the ability to strike outside of Afghanistan within six to 12 months.
