US authorizes first update to Covid booster shots
The US Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday authorized its first update to both Pfizer and Moderna’s Covid booster shots in order to target newer variants and a possible winter surge.
People who have received their primary two doses of either vaccine, as well as those who have received the initial two doses and one or two boosters, will be eligible for the updated vaccines as long as its been two months since their last shot, the FDA said.
Until now, Covid shots in the US have only targeted the original strain of the virus.
‘The public can be assured that a great deal of care has been taken by the FDA to ensure that these bivalent Covid-19 vaccines meet our rigorous safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality standards for emergency use authorization,’ said Dr Peter Marks, the agency’s top vaccine regulator.
The decision will now head to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and its advisory committee to issue a recommendation on how the shots should be utilized.
