Two simple tricks top chef uses to get fussy kids to eat foods they don’t like

Getting your child to embrace new foods and shed any fussy eating habits can become a battle of the wills.

Unfortunately, it’s often the kids who emerge victorious.

Sound familiar?

But if you’re a frazzled parent who’s run out of tricks, bribes and threats then help is at hand.

TV chef Curtis Stone is father to Hudson, 3, and Emerson, 6 and has two "tricks" himself for getting reluctant children to eat something they’re suspicious of.

Firstly, if one of his sons aren’t keen on trying something new, the chef does this:

"I tell them, that’s what you’re getting for dinner. And I will pack it in the lunch box again the next day," he told Mamamia .

"If you don’t repeat a food, the child will never get used to it."

According to Stone it’s important to be firm.

Oh, and forget about giving them a choice.

"The other thing is to not give them an option,"Stone adds.

"With us, when the kids get home from school, I always have a snack sitting out, like oranges. They’re hungry, so that’s what they will eat."

So there you go. No disguising certain bits of food in dishes or elaborate distraction techniques – give them the food item until they’re familiar with it and don’t give them a choice.
