Two children dead after fatal crash and shootout at funeral procession
Two children were killed in a car crash at a funeral procession on Thursday.
The children, one 12-year-old boy and his 6-year-old brother, were in a car being driven by their mother in Akron, Ohio when she collided with another car.
According to police, the brothers were hanging out of the car windows when the crash occurred. One of the boys was thrown from the car, and the other was ‘partially ejected.’
There was an argument following the crash, then seconds later a gunshot from the driver of another vehicle.
A 19-year-old arrived at Summa Health Akron City Hospital with a gunshot wound shortly afterwards, which police believe he sustained in the shootout. The driver ran from the scene and has not been located yet.
Minutes later, another shootout occurred nearby. Over a dozen shots were fired, but nobody was injured. The second shootout appears to be unrelated to the crash and funeral, police said.
The deceased child was identified as Tymar Allen. An autopsy revealed he died from blunt force trauma.
His brother, who has not yet been identified, was still hospitalized with critical injuries. He succumbed to those injuries on Saturday.
‘As a community, we must do better. We have to put our differences aside and put Akron’s youth first,’ Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan stated. ‘We have to think about the consequences of our actions because a simple lapse in judgement or a moment of anger can sometimes lead to tragic results.’
‘There has been enough tragedy and far too much death. We must let cooler heads prevail.’
The boys’ mother is facing charges related to the deaths, but authorities have not determined what they will charge her with yet. ‘We want to strike a balance and yield to grace as it relates to overly disparaging the grieving mother,’ Akron Police Lt Michael Miller said.
The funeral was for another local teenager, a 17-year-old who died of a suspected drug overdose.
Last week’s incident in Ohio was not the first instance of violence taking place at a funeral this year.
