Twitter will hand over @POTUS account to Joe Biden on Inauguration Day
The capitalised, erratic rants of the Trump era have forever changed the political landscape of Twitter.
But whether Donald Trump concedes losing the election or not or not, Twitter will hand over the official @POTUS account to President-elect Joe Biden when he’s sworn in on Inauguration Day.
A spokesman for the social media company said: ‘Twitter is actively preparing to support the transition of White House institutional Twitter accounts on January 20th, 2021.
‘As we did for the presidential transition in 2017, this process is being done in close consultation with the National Archives and Records Administration.’
Other official accounts associated with the president such as @whitehouse, @VP, @FLOTUS, will also be handed over, Twitter confirmed to POLITICO.
All existing tweets on these official accounts will be archived and Twitter will reset the accounts to zero tweets on the day Joe Biden enters the White House.
Information will not be shared between the Trump team and the incoming Biden administration during the handover, Twitter added.
In the 2016 elections when President Barack Obama handed over the account to Trump, the procedure was the same. Obama’s @POTUS archive can be found here.
Trump will continue to control his personal account, @realDonaldTrump, after Biden’s inauguration next January.
Since the November elections, a number of Trump’s tweets have been flagged by Twitter as ‘misleading’ and ‘disputed’ as he continues to make claims about the election being stolen.
After Biden becomes president, Trump’s personal account will lose the ‘world leader’ special exemption — meaning his tweets will be subject to the same rules as most users on the platform.
