The American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual convention is actually being held in New Orleans and the post was deleted minutes later, NBC reported.

The meeting was held in Nashville last year, which may explain Mr Trump’s confusion.

The mistake comes amid further developments in the Russia investigation, which has dogged Mr Trump’s time in the White House.

The president’s nominee for the vacant post of attorney general, William Barr, will tell congress “it is vitally important” that special counsel Robert Mueller completes his inquiry, AP reported, quoting from a transcript of his prepared remarks.

Mr Barr will face questions about his views on the Mueller investigation into potential coordination between Russia and the 2016 Trump presidential campaign when he appears before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

It has been reported Mr Trump will try to persuade Mr Barr, if appointed, to shut down or limit the scope of the Mueller inquiry.

The president dismissed reports the FBI opened an investigation into whether he was acting on Russia’s behalf soon after he became president and that he went to great lengths to hide the details of his conversations with Vladimir Putin.

As he left for the convention, an angry Mr Trump told reporters: “I never worked for Russia… It’s a disgrace that you even ask that question. It’s all a big fat hoax.”

However, two congressional committees are considering whether to subpoena his interpreter to give evidence about what was discussed in his meetings with the Russian president.

Representative Eliot Engel, the Democratic chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told CNN: “I would prefer not to do that. We have to see what we can find out. We may have no choice”.

The US president held talks on Monday with his Turkish counterpart, Tayyip Erdogan, on the US military withdrawal from Syria.

The pair discussed setting up a secure zone in northern Syria cleared of militia groups, the Turkish presidency said, a matter of hours after Mr Trump threatened to “devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds”.

Turkey sees key elements of Kurdish ground fighters that have led the battle against Islamic State, as terrorists, and it is feared Ankara may target them after American forces leave.

The developments come on the day the partial government shutdown which is widely blamed on Mr Trump, entered its 24th day, a new record.

The president reiterated on Twitter his claim that the Democrats were to blame for refusing to support his proposed wall on the border with Mexico.
