Trump 'spent final weeks of presidency on conspiracy theories instead of work'

Donald Trump allegedly spent the final weeks of his presidency too obsessed with conspiracy theories about his election loss to do any other work. The president is said to have spent all his time entertaining anyone who supportive of the idea that he had unfairly lost to Joe Biden.

That culminated in a White House meeting of supporters that descended into a four hour screaming match on December 18. Axios reported that Trump was all consumed with chatting to ‘anyone armed with conspiracy theories’ and that White House staff were faced with ‘an unending sea of garbage.’

The president’s official daily schedule during the final weeks in office simply stated that he planned to ‘make many calls and hold many meetings,’ as Covid continued to ravage the US.

Anger boiled over during the December meeting when pro-conspiracy lawyer Sidney Powell and other Trump allies screamed at one another over their failure to overturn any individual state election results.

Powell is said to have pleaded with Trump to declare a national security emergency to seize Dominion voting machines, after pushing baseless claims that they had been rigged to convert Trump votes to ballots for his rival Biden.

White House adviser Eric Herschmann is then said to have clashed with Powell after she claimed the same machines had also been used to help Trump win a county in Georgia.

The fractious meeting ended deadlocked, with its eight attendees split evenly between those who believed Powell’s claims, and others who thought she was talking nonsense.

Trump himself is said to have been skeptical of some of Powell’s claims, but added: ‘At least she’s going out fighting.’ Powell was later frozen out by the White House.

Her attempts to overturn the election result crashed and burned, with Joe Biden sworn in as 46th president on January 20.

Meanwhile, Trump’s impeachment defense team is due to file a framework outlining its defense later on Tuesday, The New York Times reported.

Those lawyers are likely to say that it is unconstitutional to hold an impeachment trial for Trump because he is no longer in office.

The trial – Trump’s second – accuses him of inciting the deadly January 6 US Capitol riots, and will begin on February 8.

If the former president is convicted, he will be banned from running for office again in 2024.
