A two-year-old boy has been left injured after climbing on to a luggage conveyor belt at an airport.

Officials at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta released footage of the young boy going for an unexpected ride.

The child, named Lorenzo, is seen clambering on to the conveyor belt before disappearing into a machine.

He is later spotted crawling over suitcases and then riding the belt down to the luggage room, where he is swiftly spotted and scooped up by workers.

The young boy fractured his hand during the incident and was taken to hospital, according to US media reports.

Edith Vega, the boy’s mother, said she had briefly set Lorenzo down as she printed her boarding pass – but she looked up to see her son already on the belt.

“I just went blank,” she told US news channel WSB-TV. “I wanted to jump in and try to go get him but they didn’t allow me.

“I was just freaking out and I’m, like, ‘oh my goodness, I hope he’s okay. I hope he’s just enjoying the ride’.”

Ms Vega said investigators told her Lorenzo had been travelling on the conveyor belt for five minutes by the time he was picked up.

The mother said she was glad he was alive.

Spirit Airlines told Fox News it was “working with TSA and airport officials” after the incident.

“Spirit Airlines is aware of an incident at Hartsfield-Jackson International in which an unattended child passed by a section of our ticket counter that was not staffed or open at the time,” a representative said.

“The child was able to access a back baggage area via a bag belt and sustained some injuries.

“We wish the child the best in their recovery.”
