A mother-of-three who was shielding her baby has been named as one of the victims in the shooting at a Texas supermarket.

At least 20 people have been killed and more than two dozen wounded after a gunman went on a rampage through a Walmart and shopping centre in El Paso.

Most of the victims have not been named, but Leta Jamrowski told reporters her 25-year-old sister, Jordan Anchondo, had been killed in the attack.

Ms Anchondo had been shopping for back-to-school supplies and was trying to shield her two-month-old son when she was shot and killed, her sister said.

She fell on him as she was shot and the boy is being treated in hospital for broken bones.

Ms Jamrowski, 19, said the child “pretty much lived because she gave her life”.

The family are still waiting for news on whether Ms Anchondo’s partner, Andre Anchondo, survived the attack.

Families are desperately searching for those still missing, with some posting appeals on social media.

A number of the 26 people injured in the attack have life-threatening injuries, officials have said.

Mexican foreign relations secretary Marcelo Ebrard said six Mexicans were wounded in the shooting.

He identified three as 45-year-old Mario de Alba Montes and 44-year-old Olivia Mariscal Rodriguez from Chihuahua, and 10-year-old Erika de Alba Mariscal.

All three are being treated at a hospital in El Paso.

The other three have not been named but are two men and a woman from Coahuila and Ciudad Juaraz.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, who is from El Paso, said he had visited wounded victims in hospital and met a woman who had a bullet pass through her lungs.

A spokesperson for University Medical Centre of El Paso, Ryan Mielke, said 13 people were brought to the hospital with injuries, and one later died.

Two victims who were children were transferred to El Paso Children’s Hospital, he said.

Another 11 victims between the ages of 35 and 82 were taken for treatment at Del Sol Medical Centre, hospital spokesperson Victor Guerrero said.

At least two of these people are in a “life-threatening predicament”, police said, while nine are in a critical condition.
