Teen arrested after boy, 14, shot dead while saying goodbye to old neighborhood
A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy who was saying goodbye to his old neighborhood in New York City last week.
The suspect was accompanied by his mother and an attorney on Monday when he turned himself in to police, the New York City Police Department said.
He was charged with murder, attempted murder and two counts of assault and criminal use of a firearm in connection to the shooting death of Justin Streeter.
Streeter, 14, who recently moved with his family out of East Harlem to New Jersey, was grabbing snacks at a deli with his best friend around 4.30pm Tuesday when a gunman on the street corner opened fire as they left the store.
The teens tried to run away, but both were struck. Streeter was shot in his head while his friend was hit in the leg. Streeter was taken to an area hospital in critical condition where he later died from his injuries. His friend, who is 15, was expected to recover.
Police have said that Streeter had no gang affiliations, and have not ruled out a case of mistaken identity as cause of the shooting.
Streeter’s grieving father, Damon Streeter, previously told CBS News that the family left Manhattan to get the kids away from violence in the city. His son had been visiting his grandparents in Harlem when he was killed.
‘He was a child, just going to the store with his best friend. They took my son from me,’ he said.
Cellphone video taken from the scene of the shooting shows that cops desperately tried to save Streeter’s life as he lay on the ground injured.
The NYPD has not released the name of the suspected gunman because he is a minor, and have not shared any details on any potential motive behind the shooting.
