Republican Senator Ted Cruz was caught sleeping, waking up, then snoozing again during President Joe Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress – a speech that Americans overwhelmingly approved of.

Cruz, who has been a vocal supporter of Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump, appeared to doze off about an hour into Biden’s address, as he brought up the migrant crisis at the southern border with Mexico.

Videos that circulated the Internet showed Biden arguing in favor of his proposal to handle the surge of migrants, when the camera cut to Cruz with his eyes closed. Cruz quickly opened his eyes, looking sleepy, and blinked and looked around the room before shutting them again.

Cruz later quote tweeted a recording of himself falling asleep and commented, ‘#BoringButRadical.’

Shortly after, Cruz tweeted that Republican Senator Tim Scott’s rebuttal of Biden’s address immediately afterward was ‘well done’.

‘Tim outlined Republican values and leadership – a sharp contrast to Biden’s radical vision for our country that would turn the American Dream into an American nightmare,’ Cruz wrote.

But a CBS News/YouGov poll showed that most Americans did not feel the same as Cruz. Among viewers, 85% approved of Biden’s address compared to only 15% who disapproved. And 78% said they were optimistic about America after watching the speech, while 13% were pessimistic and 9% were neither.

Biden is urging Congress to pass his immigration reform bill to ‘fix’ the country’s policies around migrants. The president plans to tackle issues in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to curb the number of migrants seeking refuge in the US.

Another video of Cruz went viral in late March, when he tweeted ‘live footage from the banks of the Rio Grande’ and called it #BidenBorderCrisis. In the wildlife documentary style clip, Cruz tried to show the state of the border which Republicans consider in crisis – but became the subject of many Internet jokes and memes.
