Teacher 'said Black King t-shirt was racist and called for white history month'
A 13 year-old boy claims his teacher told him his ‘Black King’ t-shirt was racist, and says she also called for a white history month. Latrell Taft, from Edmond in Oklahoma, says the unnamed teacher abruptly targeted his clothing – a birthday gift – while teaching a chemistry lesson on Tuesday.
Latrell said: ‘She said that if she had a shirt that said white queen, it would have been racist. Then after that, she said we need a white history month. I said black people don’t have enough recognition, and we barely learn about black people in February at my school.
‘I was embarrassed.’ Latrell said most students in his class at Heartland Middle School sided with the teacher to brand his clothing, which had an outline of Africa, racist. Afterwards. Latrell went home and told his mom Melissa Shirley what happened.
She told KFOR that there were ‘very few’ other black children at the school, and that her initial attempts to report the incident were ‘brushed off.’
A school spokesman said an investigation was ongoing and that ‘swift action’ will be taken if they discover Latrell was the victim of racist bullying.
He says he does not want to return to the school while the teacher remains employed there.
