Snow started falling in Calgary early Friday morning and is expected to continue falling on and off through Saturday.

The City of Calgary is asking drivers to use caution on trouble spots like hills and bridge decks (which may be icy) and to drive for the winter conditions.

Road crews will focus on clearing high-volume roads until the snow stops falling, at which time they’ll launch their seven-day snow and ice control plan.

Snow route parking ban penalties to increase in Calgary

According to the city’s 7 a.m. snow clearing update, it’s not anticipated a snow route parking ban will be put in place. However, people heading out of town for the long weekend are asked to keep their vehicles off snow routes in case one is initiated while they’re gone.

As part of the snow and ice control plan, city crews start to plow, salt and sand so-called Priority 1 routes (roads with traffic volumes exceeding 20,000 a day) such as Crowchild Trail and Macleod Trail once snow has stopped falling.

Once Priority 1 routes are completed, crews focus on Priority 2 routes (roads which carry 5,000 to 19,999 vehicles a day) such as Kensington Road and Acadia Drive.

Crews then turn to clearing Priority 3 and 4 routes, which include residential areas, school and playground zones.

However, if more snow falls, the process then begins again with Priority 1 routes.

Travelers heading to YYC International Airport are warned heavy snowfalls and extreme weather conditions can lead to flight delays. Visitors are asked to check their flight before they leave and arrive early.
