Six dead after man and woman launch ‘ambush’ gun attacks on police

Multiple people have been killed and schools are on lockdown after two shooters went on a rampage and engaged in a long gunfight with police.

At least one police officer has been killed after being shot in the head and reports coming out of Jersey City in the US say the death toll currently stands at six, including the gunmen.

NBC New York reports three civilians are among the dead after an 'ambush' shooting at a bodega – a convenience store – which began this afternoon.

The dead man has been identified as a married father-of-five.

A police officer was said to have approached suspects in a cemetery after reports of a homicide and was shot in the head.

The gunmen fled and entered a Jewish supermarket on Martin Luther King drive in the city in northeastern New Jersey, and a shoot-out ensued from 12.30pm local time.

The shooters were said to be armed with a long gun and exchanged fire with cops for several hours. They were barricaded inside the store.

Reports at this early stage suggest three people were killed in the store, but details are still emerging.

Dramatic videos posted on social media showed heavily-armed SWAT teams crawling on the ground towards the store, ducking behind doorways and staying close to the walls as the neighbourhood became a war zone.

The suspects were said to have arrived in a truck. MailOnline reports they are believed to be one man and one woman.

Every school in the city has been placed on lockdown as night draws in.

Governor Phil Murphy tweeted: "I have been briefed on the unfolding situation in Jersey City. Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department, especially with the officers shot during this standoff, and with the residents and schoolchildren currently under lockdown."
