Sisters, 5 and 8, who vanished in woods found thanks to granola bar wrappers
Two sisters, aged five and eight, who vanished in woodland near their home have been found ALIVE thanks to their survival skills training.
Leia Carrico, eight, and her five-year-old sister Caroline Carrico were last seen outside their home in Benbow, north west of Sacramento, on Friday at 2.30pm.
The girls vanished after walking into woods in the North California wilderness.
A huge search and rescue operation was launched as police desperately tried to find the girls.
Thankfully, the girls were found around a mile from their home by a fire chief and a firefighter from a local volunteer force.
Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said the Leia and Caroline were found "safe and sound" and were uninjured thanks to the survival skills they learned at their local youth club.
He said: "This is an absolute miracle.
"This is rugged territory, this is an extreme environment. How they were out there for 44 hours is pretty amazing."
Before the sisters disappeared they had asked their mum if they could go for a walk.
She refused but soon noticed the girls were gone.
Police were called at around 6pm on Friday and a huge search was launched to find them.
On Saturday, the Coast Guard, the US National Guard and fire crews were brought in to help.
Officers tracked them after finding boot marks in the wooded area near their home, as well as granola wrappers.
Humboldt County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Fridley said their mum had just bought the brand of snacks, leading them to believe the girls had "stocked up" before they disappeared.
He told SF Gate : "We have found some clues during the day that have made us change our directions.
"We found some granola bar wrappers and we were able to confirm with the mom that yes, these are granola bars that [she’s] bought in the last few days.
"So the wrappers showed us a direction from where they started to where the wrappers ended at."
Police said the area is steep and has dense forest and it was a ‘miracle’ the girls were found alive.
