Senate leader calls on Pence to invoke the 25th for Trump's immediate removal

Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer has joined the list of politicians calling for Donald Trump to be removed following yesterday’s violence on Capitol Hill.

Urging Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th amendment to oust him from office, the New York senator said: ‘This president should not hold office one day longer.’

He added: ‘If the vice president and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress should reconvene to impeach the president.’

It comes after thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to disrupt Joe Biden’s certification as the next President of the United States.

Four people have been confirmed dead following the rioting, which the 2020 election winner called an ‘unprecedented assault’ on US democracy.

Trump has been accused of inciting the violence, after speaking at a ‘Save America’ rally in Washington DC earlier that day, in which he repeated the same unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud.

Announcing that he will ‘never concede’ the result, he told his followers: ‘You’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.’

His personal attorney Rudy Giuliani also spoke at the rally, calling for a ‘trial by combat’ to settle the dispute.

The 25th Amendment of the US Constitution provides for a sitting president to be removed from office by his own team should he be deemed unfit for office.

It would require Pence and a majority of other senior White House staffers to agree that Trump is ‘unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,’ and would see Pence take over.

Representatives are also in the process of beginning impeachment proceedings to try and remove Trump.
