Samuel Little: Who were the victims of America’s worst serial killer?
A serial killer who sketched portraits of his victims is considered to be the most prolific murderer in US history, targeting mainly “marginalised and vulnerable women” across a 35-year period.
Samuel Little confessed to murdering nearly 100 people across the US between 1970 and 2005, with FBI analysts believing the nomadic killer’s claims are credible.
Police have verified 50 of the former boxer’s 93 confessions, while the others are awaiting confirmation.
Most of the 79-year-old’s victims were black women and were believed to have been drug users, sex workers or others living on the fringes of society.
This meant their deaths were never investigated by the FBI.
The serial killer had been serving life since 2012 for the murders of three women when he confessed, with portraits he sketched of his victims emerging earlier this year.
The FBI posted a page on its website on Sunday “seeking assistance connecting victims to Samuel Little’s confessions”.
The bureau added that Little “remembers his victims and the killings in great detail” but is “less reliable, however, when it comes to remembering dates”.
Here we take a look at some of the serial killer’s confessions that are yet to have been confirmed.
Miami, Florida – 1971 to 1972
Little said that during this period he met a “good-looking” 18 to 19-year-old transgender.
In a video confession he described the victim as a “black male dressed up as a female”.
He added that the victim wanted to be known as Mary Ann or Marianne.
Little said they met at a bar known as The Pool or Pool Palace near 17th Avenue in Miami.
The murderer says he later drove the victim down Highway 27 before killing her on a driveway, possibly near a sugarcane field.
He said he later left the body in thick muddy water.
Describing how he disposed of the body, Little said in his video confession: “So, I got out of the car, pulled her out and dragged her into the growth back there.
“And pulled her deeper into… there’s a path, a little path, that went in somewhere, I don’t know where it led to, but it was running deeper into the undergrowth.
“And we ran into some water running, but before we got to the water the earth was mushy.
“I turned her loose and she fell into it face down.”
New Orleans, Louisiana – 1982
Little said he met a “honey-coloured” black woman, between 30 to 40-years-old, in New Orleans in 1982. She told him she lived with her mother.
The killer claimed they had met in a club where she was attending a birthday party with a group of her friends and two of her sisters.
Little said he left with the woman in his Lincoln Continental Mark III, before they drove down a dirt road along a canal that was being dredged.
He says they then got out of the car before he killed her and left the body there.
Covington, Kentucky – 1984
Little said that he met a 25-year-old white woman outside a strip club in 1984.
He described her as having short blonde hair, blue eyes and with a “hippie appearance”. She asked for a lift to Miami, where her mother lived.
Little says he strangled the woman in the backseat of his car before leaving her body on the top of a hill.
Little Rock, Arkansas – 1992 to 1994
The serial killer said he met a 24-year-old black woman in Little Rock during this period. Her name was Ruth and her mother lived in North Little Rock.
Little said that it was cold and possibly snowing, and he ended up staying with her for around three days.
The murderer told investigators he later drove her down a dirt road and strangled her to death, before placing her body on a pile of branches and old cornstalk in a cornfield.
Las Vegas, Nevada – 1993
Little was driving a Cadillac to Las Vegas when he met a black woman who was around 40-years-old.
He confessed to taking her to a motel room where he strangled her to death.
Little said he then put her body in the boot of his car and drove her to the outskirts of Las Vegas, before rolling the woman downing a steep slope on a remote road.
He says it is likely her body was never found.
Little’s nomadic lifestyle, where he moved from place to place targeting vulnerable people, meant it took years for police to catch him.
The FBI has said it is working with police to verify the remaining victims from his confessions.
The bureau has also released a map marking the locations of his attacks.
The exact timing of when Little drew the pictures isn’t known, but the FBI said they were based on his memories of some of his victims.
The FBI released videos in which Little describes in detail the women he claims to have murdered.
Little is expected to die in a prison in Texas.
