Roe v Wade reactions: 'Live in infamy', Saving kids from 'ravages of abortion'
US politicians and public figures clashed in their reactions to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade, with some believing the decision will ‘live in infamy’ while others celebrated saving children from the ‘ravages of abortion’.
The court on Friday morning ruled 6-3 in favor of the state of Mississippi in the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, allowing the state to ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. That effectively struck down the court’s landmark 1973 Roe ruling that provided a constitutional right to abortion nationwide.
Shortly after the decision, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tweeted that ‘today’s Supreme Court opinion will live in infamy as a step backward for women’s rights and human rights’.
‘Most Americans believe the decision to have a child is one of the most sacred decisions there is, and that such decisions should remain between patients and their doctors,’ the 2016 Democratic nominee for president wrote.

Meanwhile, Texas’ Republican Governor Greg Abbott celebrated the high court allowing states ‘to protect the lives of all unborn babies in America’.
‘Texas will always fight for the innocent unborn, and I will continue working with the Texas legislature and all Texans to save every child from the ravages of abortion and help our expectant mothers in need,’ stated Abbott.
Speaking on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the ruling a ‘slap in the face to women’.
‘The radical Supreme Court is eviscerating Americans’ rights and endangering their health and safety,’ stated the California Democrat. ‘Today the Republican-controlled Supreme Court has achieved their dark, extreme goal of ripping away a woman’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions.’

It’s a slap in the face to women about using their own judgement to make their own decisions about reproductive freedom.” https://t.co/xPU1cZrm5I pic.twitter.com/MvNs1COiOs
Pelosi called out major figures in the GOP, including the former president and the Senate minority leader.
‘Because of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, the Republican Party and their supermajority on the Supreme Court, American women today have less freedom than their mothers,’ Pelosi said.
She vowed that ‘the rights of women and all Americans are on the ballot this November’.
