Report: Father of Atatiana Jefferson dies of heart attack

Less than a month after Atatiana Jefferson was fatally shot by a white police officer inside her Texas home, her father has died.

Marquis Jefferson, 58, died Saturday night from a heart attack, a spokesman told NBC DFW.

“It’s just sad because of grief. I don’t know what else to say,” Bruce Carter told the station. “Less than a month ago, he was working at El Centro, mentoring kids twice a week. He just couldn’t get back from what happened with his daughter.”

Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew the night of Oct. 12 when she heard noises outside her Dallas home, police said. She grabbed a gun and looked out her bedroom window, at which point police officer Aaron Dean shot and killed her.

Body camera footage shows that Dean yelled, “Put up your hands up! Show me your hands!,” without identifying himself as law enforcement before fired through through the window and into the home.

A neighbor had called police for a wellness check after noticing that a front door had been left open.

Dean resigned from the Fort Worth Police Department and has been charged with murder.

A week after his daughter’s death, Marquis Jefferson won a temporary restraining order that temporarily halted her scheduled funeral, which had been taken over by her aunt without his input.

“It’s been very tough,” he told WFAA at the time. “Tay wanted me to be strong. I have to be strong. My mission is not over.”

Her funeral was eventually held on Oct. 24 as hundreds of people turned out to honor her.

“We are tired of talking to our children about police, tired of crying mothers, tired of funerals,” Pastor Bryan Carter said at the funeral.
