Rapper Fish Scales shot during escape after he was kidnapped outside his brewery

Hip hop artist Fish Scales was kidnapped outside his Atlanta brewery and shot while he tried to escape, authorities said.

The rapper, of the group Nappy Roots, was targeted on Wednesday by assailants outside the Atlantucky Brewery in the Castleberry Hill neighborhood of Atlanta, which he co-owns.

Police in the area are searching for two suspects, who they also say robbed a customer at the brewery before forcing their way at gunpoint into Scales’ white Mercedes-Benz.

The suspects drove Scales, whose real name is Melvin Adams Jr, to his home in Hapeville, Georgia.

‘Once he had an opportunity, he tried to make a run for it,’ said Hapeville Police Captain Christian Hunt at a press conference. That’s when the suspects shot Adams in the leg, Hunt said.

Adams’ car was later found abandoned on Oak Street in Hapeville, near the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The suspects only got away with about $30, police said.

Adams was taken to a local hospital in Georgia, where he can be seen ‘awake and smiling’ in photos sent to local news outlets.

‘I am certainly relieved that my business partner and brother Scales is safe and recovering…that is what is most important’, said William Hughes, Adams’ partner in Nappy Roots.

Hughes performs under the name Skinny DeVille. ‘We would appreciate it if the public would allow us some privacy over the next week while we re-evaluate the situation, as this is an ongoing investigation,’ he added. ‘I assure you that we will share the outcomes, as the police department allows. But know for now that Scales is safe and recovering.’

Nappy Roots formed in 1995 at Western Kentucky University. Both Adams and Hughes grew up in Milledgeville, Georgia.

The group was nominated for two Grammys in 2003, one for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for their song ‘Po Folks.’
