Peloton finally recalls treadmills after child's death and 70 other incidents

Two popular Peloton exercise machines have been recalled after one child death and 70 injuries.

Peloton and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced in a press release on Wednesday morning that customers who have the Peloton Tread or the Peloton Tread+ should stop using them immediately.

Customers are encouraged to contact Peloton for a full refund or other qualified remedy.

The CPSC warned the public about the Tread+ in April, but Peloton did not immediately cease sales of the product.

Peloton CEO John Foley said in a statement that the decision to recall both machines ‘was the right thing to do for Peloton’s Members and their families’.

‘I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request that we recall the Tread+,’ Foley stated. ‘We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologize.’

Foley said that the announcement ‘reflects our recognition that, by working closely with the CPSC, we can increase safety awareness for our Members’.

‘We believe strongly in the future of at-home connected fitness and are committed to work with the CPSC to set new industry safety standards for treadmills,’ Foley continued. ‘We have a desire and a responsibility to be an industry leader in product safety.’

CPSC Acting Chairman Robert Adler stated he was ‘pleased’ that the commission and Peloton came to an agreement on two separate recalls of the products.

The commission on Wednesday morning voted to accept the agreement that requires Peloton to immediately stop selling and distributing both products in the US. It is the result of ‘weeks of intense negotiation and effort’, Adler said.

‘I would like to thank the CPSC technical staff who have worked tirelessly to protect consumers and to warn the public,’ Adler said. ‘Today we have taken steps to prevent further harm from these two products.’

Peloton is working on hardware modifications to the Tread+. The Tread was sold from around November to March in an invitation-only release in the US, and Peloton is also working on a repair for owners in the coming weeks.
