Northern California earthquake: 6.2 magnitude tremor hits off the coast

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Northern California on Monday and could be felt as far away as San Francisco and other Bay Area cities.

The quake struck just after noon local time off Cape Mendocino near Humboldt County, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was 30.8 miles southwest of Ferndale, 36.3 miles west and southwest of Fortuna and 45.2 miles southwest of Eureka, the USGS reported.

‘It was slow rolling at first, but then it really got going,’ Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal told CNN. ‘We haven’t had a shake like this since 2010.’

Injuries and catastrophic damage were not immediately reported. Some buildings had minor damage including broken glass.

Humboldt County emergency responders continued to assess damage into the afternoon.

A few aftershocks were detected. However, a tsunami was not expected, according to the US National Tsunami Warning Center.

California’s Office of Emergency Services tweeted it is ‘actively monitoring’ the situation and ‘coordinating closely with local partners in the region to protect communities from any secondary impacts’.

Humboldt County is about 4,000 square miles and has just 135,000 residents. It is about 270 miles north of San Francisco, near California’s border with Oregon.

The Humboldt County quake occurred more than 40 tremors from magnitude 3.5 to 5.8 shook the coast of Oregon on December 7.
