Newborn twin girls drowned in their own blood after their mum allegedly took cocaine and ecstasy while she was pregnant.

The unnamed infants died just two days after they were delivered at a children's hospital on Saturday, and their mum, Tiffany Marie Roberts, was arrested on murder and child abuse allegations.

Both babies – who were born prematurely at just 23 weeks' gestation – tested positive for illicit drugs including cocaine after they were born, according to court documents.

Doctors delivered the babies after Roberts took MDMA, fell short of breath and was rushed to hospital, said police in the US city of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Sharing a photo of the newborns on social media, Roberts wrote: "Bless these beautiful babies girls came early but they gonna be strong."

The force was alerted after the twins died on Tuesday after battling against internal haemorrhaging.

According to court documents, doctors said Roberts tested positive for ecstasy the day she gave birth and admitted to using the drug, the Tennessean reported.
