Mystery as 'cranky' Donald Trump ends Christmas holiday early to return to DC

Donald Trump is unexpectedly ending his Christmas break to Florida to return to Washington DC amid reports he has spent it in a foul mood.

The President of the United States is scheduled to leave his Mar-a-Lago private members’ club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Thursday, skipping a $1,000-a-head New Year’s Eve dinner he was expected to attend. He will fly back to the White House.

Trump is said to have spent the sunshine break, which began on December 23, fuming about his election loss to Joe Biden. He is also said to be displeased about his wife Melania’s renovations of their living quarters. CNN reported that Trump is said to be concerned that Iran could launch an attack on the US on January 3.

That will be the first anniversary of the death of its top general Qasem Soleimani, whose death Trump ordered by a drone strike. The president has also teased his plans for January 6, when the US Congress plans to officially certify electoral college votes naming Joe Biden as the next president.

Trump is said to be excited by the prospect of an upset during the certification, which normally only serves as a ceremonial event. It will likely be delayed after at least one pro-Trump senator and one representative indicated plans to object to Biden’s win.

Trump is said to be hopeful that Vice President Mike Pence – who will oversee the certification – could overturn the result.

Pence has given no indication that he plans to do so, with Biden set to be inaugurated on January 20.

It has been suggested that Trump may break with tradition by refusing to watch his successor being sworn in, although the president has yet to make any comment on his plans.
