Mum ‘stabs baby son and throws two-year-old from 11th storey in double murder’

A young mum has been charged with murdering her two sons after she allegedly stabbed her seven-month-old and threw her two-year-old from an 11th storey window.

After attacking her 70-year-old grandfather and killing the boys, Aleah Newell, 20, jumped from the high-rise flat in a failed bid to kill herself, say prosecutors in the US city of Chicago.

It is claimed that just days earlier she had asked for help and for her sons to be taken away from her because "she couldn’t take care of them".

Prosecutors have revealed disturbing allegations in the case, saying seven-month-old Ameer was stabbed 19 times and placed face down in a bathtub filled with scalding hot water, suffering extensive burns.

Newell, who had been staying at a homeless shelter, then went into the living room, where she hurled her two-year-old son Johntavis out of an open window at her grandfather's flat.

Police claim the mum jumped from the same window, but her fall was was broken by scaffolding on the third floor of the building and she survived, NBC News reported.

Officers have obtained CCTV footage which shows Johntavis and Newell falling from the window.

Newell was awake and alert after the plunge, and was being treated in hospital for injuries including a broken wrist and ankle.

When officers arrived at the block of flats, they found Newell and Johntavis, who was dead, on the floor outside.

They were directed to the flat, where they found Newell's injured grandfather and Ameer, who was in the bathtub and could not be saved.

Investigators determined that Newell began running hot water in the tub in the early hours of Thursday and then attacked her grandad as he used the toilet.

She came up behind him, put him in a chokehold and hit him over the head with a towel bar before using a kitchen knife to stab him more than ten times in the ear, neck, shoulders, hands, arms and mouth, prosecutors allege.

The grandfather lost consciousness, but survived the attack.

She then stabbed Ameer and threw Johntavis out of the window before jumping, it is claimed.

A security guard called 911 after hearing Newell crash onto the concrete at about 2am local time.

Police found two knives and a broken knife handle at the scene.

Newell had been staying at a homeless shelter in the days leading up to the attack, CBS News reported.

When she was five months pregnant with Ameer in February last year, she opened an emergency exit on a commuter train while it was moving, the report added.

Prosecutors said Newell had previously attempted suicide last summer and that she had taken medication for an unspecified mood disorder.

Adrianne Thomas, who met Newell at the shelter, said the mum had asked for help.

She added: "We felt so bad we started talking to her trying to make sure you know, she was OK.

"She asked one of the persons in there, have you ever been in a mental hospital?

"She said when she first got here to intake, she asked them to take her kids, she couldn’t take care of them.

"They told her no, she had to do it on her own."

Newell has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

She was also charged with trying to murder her grandfather.
