Mum rushed to hospital at Christmas comes home to amazing act of kindness

The festive season is known as a time when lots of accidental injuries happen – but fortunately the incredible emergency service teams working over the holidays are there to help.

Mum Rachel Schoonover, based in Elmira, New York, accidentally broke a wine glass and sliced her wrist on Christmas Eve, hitting an artery in the process.

The injury was last thing the mum needed during the holidays, but her local fire department made an incredible gesture, going "above and beyond" to help her – and it’s gone viral.

In a Facebook post, she explained: "Instantly, blood was everywhere, spraying all corners of my kitchen. I wrapped it up in a towel, called 911, called my mom, and continued to bleed everywhere."

It was the West Elmira Fire Department that arrived first, and used a tourniquet to slow the bleeding, talking to Rachel until the medical team showed up as she felt she was going to pass out.

As her mum hadn’t arrived yet, the firemen also offered to look after her son Dec at the house until someone else got there.

Thankfully, two IVs, nine stitches, and one tetanus shot later, Rachel discharged.

"I was dreading the bloody mess that was waiting for me in every room. Surprisingly, though, the mess was nearly nonexistent. On the counter, I found this letter."

The note read: "Hope you feel better and have a happy holiday with your boy we cleaned up some after you left hope you don’t mind. We didn’t know what to do with the rug though. Have a glass of wine for us and feel better. Happy holidays. West Elmira Firemen".

The firemen had gone to the trouble of cleaning all the bloody surfaces and floors, as well as look after Rachel’s son.

She said that they went "above and beyond" and she is "eternally grateful".

The heartwarming gesture has been widely shared on Facebook, and has 15,000 likes from people moved by their efforts.

One user commented: "wow, over and above the line of duty. so awesome of them to do that for you. definitely heroes!"

"What a relief to return and not be faced with that horrific mess to clean! These Firemen really understand the meaning of service! Thank you and congratulations on a job well done!", another said.
