Mum and baby son ‘kicked off flight because of their rare skin illness’
A furious mother has revealed how American Airlines kicked her and her one-year-old son off a flight because of their rare genetic skin disorder.
Jordan Flake, from Columbia, US, took to Facebook to describe what happened to her when she boarded the flight from Texas to go and see her husband in Dallas before his military deployment.
She said she was "discriminated" for having Ichthyosis, a condition which gives dry and "fish-scale skin " on, ironically, Rare Disease Day.
American Airlines has since apologised to the mum, US media report.
"Today is #rarediseaseday ! " Jordan’s post read. "While I’d like to share something positive, Jackson and I were just discriminated against… big time!
"We boarded our American Airlines flight where everyone smiled and talked to Jackson.
"Before take off a man (employee called on flight to handle the situation) came up to my row and asked the 2 men sitting next to me to get up."
The disgruntled woman goes on to explain how the employee then "quietly" asked about "my rash" and if she had a letter from the doctor confirming it was okay for her to be flying.
Jordan said: "I explained to him that it was called Ichthyosis and it was a genetic skin condition.
"He walked up to the front to talk to the crew. He apparently also googled it during that time.
"He came back and said he apologized but we wouldn’t be able to fly and we had to get off the plane."
Ichthyosis is a condition that causes widespread and persistent dry, "fish-scale" skin. Some strains of Ichthyosis are inherited at birth while others are acquired during adulthood.
one in 250 to 1,000 people, everyday care can help alleviate the symptoms.
The mum said the staff member then helped her get her bags and leave the plane, before she was booked on a another flight with a different airline.
She explained how she talked to the pilot before getting off, and "the pilot seemed ok with it, but the flight attendant rudely said (without even acknowledging me) ‘well she doesn’t have a letter from a doctor, so…’”
Jordan says she had to argue to be put up in a hotel.
"I have never been so humiliated in my life! I have emailed them and am waiting for a reply, " the mum said.
"Happy Rare Disease Day! Quit being ignorant and take the time to listen to people! I shouldn’t have to explain myself."
