Mother overwhelmed by response after autistic son’s ‘like me’ question

A Florida mother who tweeted about her autistic son asking if people would “like” him says they have been “overwhelmed” by the response on social media.

Kerry Bloch’s 21-year-old son David had been nonverbal most of his life.

And he had grown lonely after developing a severe immunodeficiency disorder that led to him being home-schooled and isolated from other children in order to prevent him from getting infected.

David, who speaks only when prompted to, lives with his parents Kerry and Robert and gave them a surprise when he spontaneously asked them a question for the first time: “Would someone like me?”

When Ms Bloch, from the city of Neptune Beach, shared her son’s question on Twitter along with a picture of him, she did not expect it would spark thousands of retweets and responses from people worldwide.

One user tweeted: “Tell David, he has a friend from London… and my family. Much love.”

Another said: “My son is autistic too. He’s 30 years old and works a part time job on the local navy base, he assembles lens for glasses. We [love] you David!”

A third user wrote: “Oh, my goodness. This is so beautiful! Your son gives me hope. My nephew (8) is also autistic and nonverbal, and works SO HARD every day.

“We love him so fiercely and pray he will find his voice. What an inspiration you are! What a hero!”

In response to the flood of messages, Ms Bloch has now tweeted: “To say that David and I are overwhelmed by the response to this simple tweet is putting it mildly.

“Our hearts have never been touched like this. I am reading every reply to David. It’ll take time but know that every one of you have blessed us. Love you all!”

Speaking to Fox News, she said: “His grandma lived with us for five years after her stroke. She passed a little over a year ago, so now it’s just the three of us.

“We are pretty isolated here and have prayed continually that David would find friends.”
